Two Bad Bills Going Down

This story on the contents of the "Energy Bill" will warm the crockery of your heart, especially if it runs on fossil fuels. It's not even the ANWR drilling part that I am most concerned about. If they did that carefully, they could manage not to ruin the place. The hydrogen cell funding provisions are actually a very good idea, because it is a step toward reduction in demand for oil. It's the enormous corporate welfare and pork provisions in it that I think are just crazy.

"The bill calls for $8.1 billion in tax breaks over 10 years, most of it going to promote coal, nuclear, oil and natural gas energy industries."

Great, so 8.1 billion with a "B" is no problem when we are running an enormous deficit and energy companies are posting record profits, according to Republicans? Like we aren't going to use gas any more if we don't have them "promote" their services? Of course, this bill is apparently DOA in the Senate anyway, thank goodness. There are enough Republicans that also think this is a bad idea that it is apparently not going to be passed. It may be close though. Stay tuned.

There aren't enough foster families to go around for kids that have had screwed-up things happen to them in their lives, so now some enterprising bigots errrrr, I mean "concerned citizens" in Austin want to make it so gay couples can't be foster parents, so there can be even fewer homes to care for them. Fortunately, it appears that there is enough Republican opposition to that provision of the bill to stop it, as well as the Republican governor saying that he doesn't want the issue to interfere with overall passage of the bill either way. It's amazing to me that while most people wouldn't dream of discriminating on the basis of race, some of these same people will say that doing so on the basis of partner choice is fine. It's called bigotry, and I'm sorry that there isn't enough lipstick to put on the pig to call it something else. The people that support that bill should really be ashamed of themselves.

Strong words...

bigot

n : a prejudiced person who is intolerant of any opinions differing from his own

Perhaps you too sir, are a bigot. WHat makes your view any more proper than mine. I certainly resent being labeled a bigot because I hold a different view. I do not hate gay people. I do not even "dislike" them. You are painting with a rather broad brush and I dare say that your words come across as rather pompous.

I am plenty tolerant of the opinions of others. It's fine to think that they are immoral or going to hell, which I think that you do. While I think it's strange to think that way, it doesn't upset me terribly.

What upsets me and makes for bigotry is working to pass a law saying that they cannot do something good for society that they want to do, simply because of their sexual partners. That is the point at which the line is crossed and you are meddling in the lives of others, which in my opinion is wrong. People that are tolerant won't try to do this, and fortunately there are enough Republicans that are tolerant, even in very red state like Texas.

I think Republicans are closeted homosexuals. This would explain their extreme opposition towards homosexuals.

Hey, still waiting on the moderate opinions.

No drilling in ANWR, yea, hey let's go pet the caribou, oh there aren't caribou? But, what about all the flora and fauna? Oh, none of that either? Well, there is dirt there and fossil fuels are bad. Yea, keep trying.

Two completely conflicting opinions in two paragraphs, no didn't see that coming.

Gays adopting? I would have thought that you were against that with the education you have, but you had to go left, never saw that one coming either.

Two Dogs-The arctic tundra is very fragile. It grows by the inch and dies by the foot. Your foot, my foot. Today, you can still see footprints and wheel-tracks made 40 years ago by researchers who were exploring the Alaskan Outback. Simply because the only use we can find for the arctic is to milk it of oil doesn't mean we should violate one of the few remaining pristine places on the planet. There isn't enough oil there to supply the US for a month. The answer isn't to pump more oil, the answer is to develop alternative sources of energy--and the oil companies have ben buying up most of those patents...now they are waiting for uncle Sam to give them tax breaks to develop technology they've buried.

Fostering and gays.
It is a common misconception that gays are different from straights. Truth is, except for those who are intentionally living a 'loud and in your face' lifestyle, the only difference between a family with gay parents versus straight parents is what happens in the bedroom. And since that happens behind closed doors...

C'mon Two Dogs, you crochety mean ol' meanie, you can't be as bull-headed as you come across in your posts. I think you like to push buttons and provoke people ;)

Two Dogs, read what I actually wrote, not what you think I meant, and comment on that. What I said about ANWR: "It's not even the ANWR drilling part that I am most concerned about. If they did that carefully, they could manage not to ruin the place." Doesn't sound too loony to me. I'm saying that I think maybe it's OK to drill there, if they do it carefully. Also, I never said fossil fuels are bad. How do you spin something I say as "left" when I mostly agree with you on it?

You also failed to notice that the story was about FOSTER parents, not ADOPTIVE parents.

Umm, you consider letting gays have foster children in their home is a "left" view? Then why do NO other states, no matter how red, have a law like that in effect? Could it be that you are so far right that no matter what I say you will put me down as being "left"? It seems likely. This is another example of a view being held by all but you on the far right, and you then calling it left because we don't agree with the far right. I would estimate that only about half the Republican party maybe agrees with you on that one Two Dogs, if that.

Erik, I think Kelly hit the nail on the head when she said that Two Dogs is a little BITCH!!!!!Well, she didn't say that exactly, but she knows that he likes to "push buttons and provoke people".

If you tell Mr. Dogs it's day, he will argue that it's night somewhere on earth. If you look at one of his recent post, you will see his attempt to apologize for this outlandish behavior.

Paul Mitchell said...

I actually apologize quite frequently, can you imagine that? And Kelly, I am a big, ol' teddy bear.

Erik, as far as the foster/adoptive household thing, why is the government involved in that business? It seems that every time we turn around, our government is involved with something else that they have no business dealing with.

Erik Grow said...

Well, whether it is government or not, there has to be some way to try to help ensure that children are not in abusive households, and an agency with the legal authority to get them out when necessary.

I am in total agreement. My only regret is that something wasn't in place during the Boys Town scandal!!!!

Two dogs _and_ a teddy bear. Hmm... sounds kinky. Either that, or a really odd case of multiple personality disorder. Can I call you Bear, instead (as in loaded for..)? ;)

Paul Mitchell said...

Sure, Kelly, why not?

Erik, this is NOT a government issue to me. The government already dictates everything that we can and cannot do in our lives. I am sure that there are plenty of people that could say that I abused my kid, but I guarantee, he would kick your ass if you said it.

Erik Grow said...

So, when a kid is being abused, who has the power to stop it in "Two Dogs Land"?

Paul Mitchell said...

I stopped it at the age of four. Need I say more?
